Film Screening at Belfast Library, January 21, 2018

The Special Events Committee is sponsoring the Belfast premier of the movie Maudie, starring Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins. The film will be shown in the Abbott Room of the Belfast Library on Sunday, January 21st at 2 p.m.

Maudie depicts the unlikely alliance between two lost souls and to quote the New York Times, the leads portraying Evertt and Maud Lewis are “a beautifully matched pair who open up two closed people, unleashing torrents of feeling.” This is the true story of an arthritic artist and a curmudgeonly fisherman eking out a living in coastal Nova Scotia.

Popcorn, and other refreshments will be available. Plan on joining a discussion of the movie following the screening. In addition, the Committee will award a 2018 Maud Lewis calendar as a door prize to a lucky attendee.

Maud Lewis sold her colorful paintings to passing tourists for $2.00. Today her work hangs in museums and sells for as much as $20,000.00. The small cabin in which Maud and Evertt lived has been preserved in the Art Museum of Nova Scotia in Halifax.
