The Special Events Committee plans and organizes trips and events of cultural, historical, and natural interest to Senior College members. Our goal is to provide a value-added experience to our members by including experiences they might not otherwise have. The trips and events are also a time to meet and share common experiences with fellow members. Our trips are usually by comfortable, modern coach bus, though for small, short trips we will car pool. For day trips we usually include lunch at a nice local restaurant or a box lunch. For overnight trips we provide comfortable, but not luxurious hotels.
In the last few years our day trips have included: Maine State Botanical Gardens; Rockefeller Gardens; Thuya Gardens; Haystack School of Arts and Crafts; the Black House; Robbins Lumber; Sprague Energy; FMC Rockland carrageenan plant; cruises on the bay, river and lakes; UMaine composites lab, Hudson Museum, and planetarium; Wiscasset (Nickels-Sortwell House Castle Tucker, Musical Wonders House); Cellardoor Winery, Swan Island Blankets; Maya Angelou; Jackson Labs and the Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery; Abbe Museum and Indian sites on MDI; Owls Head Museum; Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum and Eagle Island. Our overnight trips have been to Boston; the Hudson River Valley; the Berkshires; St. Andrews, NB; and Quebec. Events have included Christmas parties, St. Patrick’s Day party, local dinner theater, and Senior College Day at the boathouse.
We want to offer trips and events of interest to our members—whether to new places or to revisit popular old places. To do this we need your feedback. Please take a few moments to complete the survey on the back to let us know your interests and priorities. Here are some trip or event categories we are considering. Please all the options that are of interest to you. Also, we invite you to make specific trip or event suggestions in the space provided after each category. If you have no interest in Special Event trips and events, let us know that too by checking the box and returning the survey; your response is also important to us.
